Unacceptable
Warning: The following blog will be about a sports figure, but is not entirely about sports.
Now, for those of you who know me...I'm not exactly a prude. I don't get offended easily, at least, not by profanity, obscenity, scatology, eating babies, and other disgusting shit like that.
But, what Randy Moss said yesterday deeply offended me.
I just want to put my two cents in, and if you're sick of the topic, skip this post.
Everything Randy Moss has done in his career to deserve fines has been ok with me. I didn't mind when he spiked the ball off of Dre Bly. Or when he squirted the referree. Or even when he verbally berated the corporate sponsers. Or pushed the traffic officer. To me, that was just the by-product of a talented and charismatic, but somewhat unstable, young man. I'm young. I've been angry. I understand that its hard for professional athletes to constantly be held to a higher standard than the public.
His "mooning" was definately blown out of proportion. I thought it was funny. I watched it live, with Grace, and she can affirm that I laughed hard when it happened. I thought it was hilarious, and the fact that he was fined anything is a joke.
And I agree with Jake(s), that while his redeeming qualities (buying cars for the homeless, giving balls to the handicapped) don't excuse his behavior, they are criminally underreported.
Until now, I have enjoyed watching Moss play, and I have been admittedly entertained by his antics. But...
"You don't write checks when you are rich"
"Ten grand ain't shit to me."
That was his part of his response when questioned about the fine levied by the NFL for his mooning. To me, this represents a much serious issue with Moss than ever before. Of course, it won't affect his play, and he won't be fined for it, but he has definitely fallen out of my favor. These comments are indicitive of the level to which professional athletes can completely lose touch with reality. Moss apparently does not appreciate his special situation in life, and he certainly doesn't appreciate the fact that 10 grand is a lot of money to a lot of people. A significant amopunt of his paycheck comes from people who save their hard earned money to watch him play. Who scrape together money at christmas to buy their kids Moss jerseys. How can Moss flaunt his wealth in the face of people who provide it to him?
I had this conversation with Jake(s) the other day, albeit in a different context. I don't hate rich people for being rich, of course not. But I can't stand when people don't appreciate their wealth. Who take it for granted. Who assume that it makes them superior. Who are overwhelmed by a sense of entitlement. Moss certainly fits in to all of these categories.
So, until now, I have like Moss as an athlete, and person....but now, just an athlete.
His personality ain't shit to me.

36 Comments:
While I agree with you that saying what he says shows he's somewhat disillusioned with reality, I feel the comment was less flaunting his wealth and more of a "fuck you, you can't do shit to me" response to the NFL, who, as you stated, shouldn't have fined him in the first place.
I mean, what if he had said about buying the homeless person the car "30 grand ain't shit to me." Would we still be chastising him? I mean, let's be honest, 10 grand ain't shit to Randy Moss. Out of line or not, the comment he made is true. All he was trying to say is he's going to do his own thing and no one-especially Big Brother(NFL) can stop him. Could he have made that point in a more graceful manner. Of course. But that's Randy Moss. That's why people love him(or hate him), because he says what he wants and does what he wants, and refuses to buy into all the bullshit. He doesn't give PC answers, doesn't do what the league wants him to do, and doesn't do what the media wants him to do.
Him stating "10 grand ain't shit to me" is no different than saying "I don't know if Tice is right for the job." It's not what corporate white America wants him to say, and thus he takes heat for it. But it ain't shit to him, the league can't touch him, and he knows it. It's just a big "fuck you" to the league for acting out of line by fining him in the first place.
Also remember, if you grew up in a 1 bedroom apartment with five siblings in rural West Virginia, you may flaunt yourself a little bit as well if you made millions and millions of dollars. Worth noting.
I'm not saying Moss is the best role model in the world, and he definitely could have said "fuck you" to the league in a different way, but I understand where he's coming from and I still respect what he's saying.
Indeed, what would the world be like if everyone spoke what was "true" regardless of social implications? Everyone would be like Simmz, I guess. Congratulations to Randy Moss, he has effectively told the NFL they can't touch him, by flaunting an issue which is central to, what, 98% of the population. And its not just corporate white america that doesn't want to hear that, its middle-class white america as well. And middle-class black america, I'd imagine (though I'm hesitant to speak for a group that I am not part of. I suppose speaking for a group in general is a bad idea. Then again, everything about my life is a bad idea.)
I hate to say this, because it was a nice gesture, but buying the homeless person a car didn't really require much "care" on the part of Moss. As we all agree, 30 g's ain't shit to Moss...so a Mercedes ain't shit to him. Here you go, Sir...something that ain't worth shit to me. You're welcome. I would have been more impressed with Moss if he had given or done something that MEANT something. Like his time...take the guy to lunch and spend the afternoon with him...bullshitting and all that. Now, he may have done this...in which case I am impressed. But I haven't heard of such a thing happening, so...Or give the guy something priceless, like one of his old jersey's, or something deeply personal. A mercedes is nice, but....it ain't shit to Moss.
Also, I don't think that previous poverty gives anyone a right to flaunt current wealth. I would hope that it would cause them to appreciate it more.
If he wanted to say fuck you to the league, why not say...Alright League, here's my $10,000. What are you gonna do with it? Line the owners pockets? Why not give it to the Tsunami victims?
He'd make the league look like asses if they didn't, he'd make 'em look whipped if they did, but he would DEFINATELY make himself look alot better.
But he doesn't care what other people think.
Now you're being a little ridiculous. I think you're asking just A LITTLE TOO MUCH of Randy Moss here. He's not Mother Teresa. Give the homeless man something deeply personal of his? Take him out to lunch and spend the afternoon with him? Have YOU ever done anything like that for a homeless person? Anything even close? He's just an athlete, he bought the guy a mercedes, let's at least be a little reasonable here and not chastise him for that.
And yes, the league should give the money to the tsunami. But to suggest that Moss use the tsunami as some kind of bargaining chip is ludacris. The tsunami killed almost 200,000 people. For Moss to use it as blackmail to make the league look bad would be a far greater insult than anything he's ever done and would be the ultimate classless move.
You're right...using the Tsunami was definately in poor taste, but it was fresh in my mind. But, I think the same principle applies: The league just takes that money and gives it to the owners. Moss should suggest they do something worthwhile with it. Charities, camps for kids, something. The NFL is infinitely rich. Its public isn't. Why not share the wealth?
As for what I do...
If the mercedes cost Moss $30,000 and he was scheduled to make $6.75 million this year (salary, I don't know of any endorsements) that is roughly .5% of his salary. If I make $18,000 this year (a stretch) then I guess proportionally, I would have to give about $94. I have given more than that to causes I believe in ...and like Moss, I prefer not to talk about it.
Aside from money, I'm somewhat ashamed that since I've been at college I haven't given of myself like I should, but I am proud of what I accomplished in my younger days. I won't take the time to list them, because I didn't do them for anyones praise. But, if someone claims that I haven't...I'll respond.
Anyway, Moss giving the ball to the kid in the wheelchair leaves a much more lasting impression with me than the mercedes.
Didn't mean to suggest you've never given to charitable causes, only that we shouldn't expect Moss to be someone he's not.
When are you coming home today? Are u playing b-ball or coming straight home?
Before this gets too far out of hand, at least, further away from the issue than intended... going in to who gave what and who didn't and how much and percentages (though I admit, I brought math in), let me just say:
While I do feel giving freely of themselves is a reasonable gesture by the rich for money they've earned, they are not obligated to do so. And its definately a slippery slope to say they should give such and such percent of their wealth and so on and so on.
But...I guess Moss' comments struck a deep chord within me, and I lashed out. Perhaps and probably unfairly. I don't know Moss, and from the looks of it, he'd probably be a pretty fun guy to hang with, rich or not.
And I do feel that the NFL should voluntarily give all fines that they impose to charity.
Sorry Jake(s) for some reason I didn't get your comment until after I submitted my own.
I'll be going to the gym and, if there are enough people, playing ball. If you come around 6 or so we can shoot some hoops or something. Then...5 shots. Yee-uh.
Already bought some smirnoff "green apple twist" for the five shots. I'll be there at 6 to shoot. I love Randy. I know he's not perfect, but I love him. He's my favorite player on my favorite team, what can I say? It's like you loving the blazers. You realize why others hate them, you know you probably should hate them, but you love them. It's just loyalty, and you can't argue with that. Five shots...oh man. That's gonna suck so bad.
I agree with above comment. This blog is gay.
Did anyone hear the quote, I belive it was by Deon Sanders, "Moss is like a beautiful woman that can't clean or cook. You don't know why you love them, but you have to, because they are so beautiful."?
It is now demanded that you, Alexander G. Hill Ballroom, blog. And soon.
Im a self made million dollar man coming at you from Oregon, stop with the hate, HATERS! Randy Moss is the best reciever of all time. The only real comparison is Jerry Rice and although he had 22 TD's in a strike year in a ton of mistresses that he paid to keep quiet. But Randall is real baller! In a strike season Randy could have had 25 to 30 TD's against the old school athlete whom didn't stay in shape all year around. With all that said, Randy Moss is an athlete under a micoscope a lot of good things for the public. He is not everyone's favorite athlete, but one should question themselves before others. I find him to be the most exciting player of all time and the game he played on Thanksgiving Day as a Rookie to be my favorite of all time. But I cannot expect everyone to embrace Moss and the flamboyant play that I appreciate. Not everyone has a CEO's mentallity and can look past the small things and think about the Big Picture of how great Randy Moss is, for those of you Working Class Heroes out there, IM sorry but you don't run this nation or make its decisions, money does that and to quote my boy Randall, "Thats Straight Cash Homie", and you don't have enough so see you at the back of the line or on my yaught in Florida during the Winter!
